29 May 2011: Droitwich boxers are winding down now after a busy season. The club itself has staged 7 tournaments since last October (more than any other club in the West Midlands Division) and has been represented by over 25 boxers at tournaments in London, Wales, Liverpool and the West Country as well as all over the Midlands. There are still some tournaments to come in June but the more relaxed summer training programme is now full swing. A full analysis of the season’s results will be given later.
As the only ABAE affiliated club in north Worcestershire our membership comes from a very wide area including Stourport, Kidderminster, Bewdley, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Pershore and Worcester (though there is a club in Worcester). To cater for this interest we are open every day. All-comers are welcome, and we try to cater through our diverse programme for all ages and interests, and for both genders.
In the summer many of the competitive boxers take time off from training, though most continue to attend the club at least once a week. The training regime is less intense with the emphasis on skills coaching and fun – though it is also a good time for senior boxers to work out on the weights and (for all) to build up strength and to focus on keeping fit.
It is also a good time for beginners as the coaches have more time to work with beginners than during the season. The Fitness and Technique sessions remain popular, and these are suitable for all age groups though they do tend to be dominated by older teenagers and adults and we are hoping to alter the focus of the Thursday session more towards juniors – the 11-17 age range. We also hope to run additional sessions for youngsters during the school summer holidays which will be a mixture of boxing coaching, keep fit and games. The squad sessions remain open to anyone interested in competitive boxing, including beginners, and these are for all age-groups (10+) during the summer.
